Here are pictures that may make you think.

A young heron is dying in an oil-laden island in Barantaria Bay on the Louisiana coast. The bay serves as the home of hundreds of herons, terns, pelicans, roseate spoonbills and gulls, all of which are probably dead by now.

This dead bird - a northern gannet - is covered in oil and lies dead along Grand Isle Beach in Louisiana. One of the members of Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research marked the casualty’s location.

While birds aren’t marine animals, they die from oil spill when their feathers are covered with the black, icky stuff. Since the bay is their home, swimming in a pool of oil is unavoidable. They start to be poisoned once they pick on their oil-covered feathers to clean themselves. This probably means animals have the ability to identify what is unclean.
